About REEI

Based in Beijing, the Rock Environment & Energy Institute (REEI) was established in July 2012. Aiming to provide research support for NGOs and corporations, we focus on environmental and energy issues such as climate change, energy policy, air pollution, carbon market, and municipal solid waste (MSW) management. Our mission is to be an independent think tank in pursuit of justice and sustainability. We have worked with different organizations, including Greenpeace East Asia, Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), the Social Sciences Research Council, the Institute of Industrial Productivity (China), and International Rivers.


Key Members of REEI

 ZHAO Ang, Director

Mr. Zhao has worked in environmental protection field for over 10 years in China. He focuses on climate change policy and renewable energy policy. Before co-founding REEI with Dr. Mao and Mr. Lin, he worked with Green Earth, Greenpeace and Windpower Intelligence on watershed conservation, coal power policy and wind power policy, respectively. Mr. Zhao holds an MSc. in Environmental Policy and Regulation from the London School of Economics and Political Science, UK.


MAO Da, Ph.D, Academic Director

Since 2004, Mr. Mao has worked with various environmental groups in China, such as Global Village of Beijing and Nature University. His research interests include environmental history of human waste management and MSW management. He is one of opinion leaders in waste management issue in China. As one of co-founders and Academic Director, he is responsible for research and knowledge management. He holds an MA. in Environmental Studies from University of Adelaide, Australia, and PhD. in Environmental History from Beijing Normal University, China.


 LIN Jiaqiao, Deputy Director

With nearly 10 years’ experience in energy and climate change field, Mr. Lin has focused his work on energy policy, low carbon development and carbon market. Before co-founding REEI, Mr. Lin worked with a carbon project developer and a couple of international organizations on various projects, including terrestrial carbon offsets project, energy efficiency and environmental management. His first degree is biology, and he has a master’s degree in Environmental Science, Policy & Management from the University of Manchester, UK.


JIANG Chao, Project Officer


JIANG Chao has four years’ work experience in chemical safety and environmental health advocacy. She has worked in one of the first established Chinese environmental NGOs, Global Village of Beijing. Chao has been following the development of Chinese and international chemical management policies. She successfully defended her thesis on the emergence of preventative chemical management policy in China and graduated from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry with an M.Sc. on Environmental Studies. Currently, Chao is mainly responsible for REEI’s Global Green and Healthy Hospitals program in China.


WANG HUI, Project Officer


Started her career as a TV reporter, WANG Hui has been working in communication field for many years. Her last job was as the Communication Officer at New Citizen Program. At REEI, she is in charge of communicating with the media, social media maintenance and performs part of fundraising and researching tasks. She has a B.A. in Journalism from Shandong University.
